Dogwhistles and Figleaves: How Manipulative Language Spreads Hate
Thursday, November 12 | 3:00 PM ET
Join us for a conversation with philosopher Jennifer Saul, Canada Research Chair in the Study of Hatred, Misinformation, and Communication at the University of Waterloo, about her book Dogwhistles and Figleaves.
Saul explores how two linguistic devices have helped drive this shift. Dogwhistles, conveying unacceptable messages in ways that escape the notice of broader audiences or influence people without their awareness, and figleaves, phrases such as “just asking questions,” providing enough cover to make unacceptable messages seem palatable. Together, these devices have exploited and deepened social divisions, helping normalize racist and conspiracist speech. Professor Saul will explain how these devices work and how we can recognize and counter them, including in today’s debates over antisemitism.
We are honored to have Jennifer join us for this timely conversation, which will also mark the coming launch of our first Project Shema–commissioned research, exploring exploring how "Zionist" can be used as a dogwhistle.
